With the 370Z on its way out, the scene is set for the Nissan 400Z to take its place. The rear-wheel-drive sports vehicle, first revealed as the Nissan Z Proto Concept, is nearly here. While certain details are still being kept under wraps, others are becoming apparent. That includes when Nissan intends to debut the 400Z.

What the Nissan Z Proto Concept and leaks reveal about the 2022 400Z

The interior and external design of the 2020 Nissan Z Proto Concept are strongly influenced by historical Z vehicles. Despite this, owing to factors such as finances and safety requirements, actual vehicles may not usually closely resemble their concept counterparts. According to Car and Driver, the production 400Z seems to match the Z Proto’s appearance pretty closely, based on video game and Instagram leaks.

As far as what’s under the hood, like the 370Z, the 2022 Nissan 400Z comes with a V6. However, unlike the 370Z, the 400Z’s V6 reportedly comes with two turbochargers, Road & Track says. Rumors suggest it’s the Infiniti Q60’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, tuned to make as much as 400 hp. And while an automatic transmission will be available, the RWD sports car will also offer a manual.

Specifics about the pricing are yet unclear. A Nissan Z forum member says, however, that the 400Z will start at $34,995. According to MotorTrend, assuming the user’s allegations are true, Nissan will also offer two $5000 packages: Type S and Type T.

Some aspects are still a mystery… for the time being

Those are the most solid information about the 2022 Nissan 400Z as of this writing. Although The Drive recently focused on the Z Proto Concept, it’s important to note that the ‘Proto’ stands for ‘prototype.’ As The Drive puts it, it’s “a show vehicle with little utility.” As a result, obtaining meaningful information on the production version is challenging.

The prototype vehicle, on the other hand, does hint at a few things. The dashboard of the Z Proto Concept, for example, maintains the iconic Z vehicle three-gauge stack. But, unlike the previous 370Z, there’s a big touchscreen in the middle, probably with a contemporary infotainment system. The rear tires on the Z Proto are wider than those on the 370Z Nismo and the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, according to The Drive.

What isn’t known is how much of the 370Z’s platform will be carried over to the 400Z. The Drive reports that the Z Proto Concept is “likely based on a substantially unaltered 370Z chassis,” but it’s only a show vehicle. MT maintains, however, that the 400Z retains the chassis of its predecessor. That does not rule out the possibility of changes to the suspension, brakes, or engine location.

The Nissan 400Z will be unveiled in 2022.

Fortunately, Z fans won’t have to wait long to find out more. The Nissan 400Z 2022 is set to make its debut on August 17, 2021. The extent to which the COVID-19 epidemic and worldwide supply constraints impacted the manufacturing timetable is unknown.

It’s difficult to tell whether or not the production-spec 400Z is worth considering without driving it. If its official price falls between $35K and $40K, it will undercut its main competitor, the Toyota Supra. The 255-hp Toyota Supra 2.0 begins at $43,090 in basic configuration. The Supra 3.0, with its 382-hp, begins at $51,090. Neither vehicle is equipped with a manual gearbox.

It will have to wait until August 17 to see whether the 2022 Nissan 400Z is worth the wait. But, if the reports and leaks are true, it very well might be.
