The wait is over: Audi has finally unveiled the 2022 E-Tron GT. But while it looks cool, it’s not the only luxury electric car in town. And then there’s the Porsche Taycan, which just got a new base model for 2021. So, which one deserves your attention the most?

Despite the differences in appearance, the 2022 Audi E-Tron GT and the 2021 Porsche Taycan are very similar under the skin. That’s because the EVs share a common platform, as both are owned by Volkswagen, reports MotorTrend. Yet they offer somewhat different perspectives.
In the base RWD variant, the 2021 Porsche Taycan is equipped with a single electric motor that develops 321 hp and 250 lb-ft via a standard 79.2 kWh battery pack. The 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus kit boosts power to 375 hp. However, these are figures under normal circumstances. With Launch Control, the base 2021 Taycan delivers up to 402 hp or 469 hp, depending on the package.

The Audi E-Tron GT Quattro 2022, on the other hand, has two engines and all-wheel drive. This engine combination produces 469 hp and 464 lb-ft in normal operation, reports Road & Track. That’s because it comes standard with a 93.4 kWh pack. And with Launch Control, power increases to 523 hp and 472 lb-ft. That brings it more in line with the Taycan 4S, which comes with a battery pack that makes 562 hp and 479 lb-ft, reports Car and Driver.
There is also the Audi RS E-Tron GT 2022. It doesn’t have a bigger battery, but it does have more power. In total, the two engines deliver 590 hp and 612 lb-ft, reports Motor1. And with Launch Control, it produces 637 horsepower. This puts it just behind the Porsche Taycan Turbo, which produces up to 670 hp with Launch Control.

On paper, however, it looks like the Audi E-Tron GT has more range. This is likely due to the increased usability of the packaging, reports Car and Driver. Audi says the E-Tron GT Quattro has a range of 238 miles and the RS has a range of 232 miles, reports The Drive. Compared to the larger package, the 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S has an EPA rating of 227 miles. And that’s in a standard form that goes up to 199 miles, reports Car and Driver.
How do the Audi E-Tron GT and the Porsche Taycan compare in terms of luxury and performance?
Since the 2022 Audi E-Tron GT won’t arrive at dealerships until the summer of 2021, it’s hard to say how it will fare against the Taycan. Still, we can compare the standard features of the two EVs.

Many of the standard features of the RS model are optional on the Quattro, reports Roadshow. For example, while the Audi E-Tron GT Quattro has adaptive suspension, the RS has air suspension. The latter is also equipped with a lockable rear differential and carbon ceramic brakes. However, both models offer the option of all-wheel steering.
The base 2021 Porsche Taycan doesn’t fall short of the E-Tron GT Quattro in terms of performance. Like Audi, the Taycan comes with adaptive suspension as standard, while air suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes are optional, MT reports. The same goes for rear-wheel steering, according to Car and Driver. And if you need a torque vectoring differential and rear-wheel steering, these are part of the Taycan 4S Performance Pack, reports Car and Driver.

But while the equipment lists of the two EVs are quite similar, their interiors are not. It’s true that the Audi E-Tron GT and the Porsche Taycan both offer vegan upholstery. However, Audi has the more standard ADAS features, vehicle and driver reports. But Tycan has two central touch screens compared to an E-Tron GT. But when it comes to options, the similarities return. Both vehicles offer amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, a windshield, and massage seats.
Which luxury EV is right for you?
The 2022 Audi E-Tron GT Quattro starts at $99,900 before tax credits; the RS model starts at $139,900. In base trim, the Porsche Taycan 2021 with rear-wheel drive is more affordable with a starting price of $79,900. However, the more comparable 4S version starts at $103,800, and that’s with a smaller battery. And the Taikan Turbo starts at $150,900.
APPROPRIATE: Choosing the base 2021 Porsche Taycan over the 2021 Tesla Model S is a mistake.
After all, it’s hard to choose between these two luxury EVs without driving one. But on paper, the E-Tron GT has a slightly greater range and, according to R&T, will likely have more luxury as standard. On the other hand, the Taycan offers better performance, at least in AWD form, and is slightly faster from 0-60, reports Roadshow. Therefore, it should be a top choice for sports car enthusiasts.
