But even though they technically belong to the same family, they are as different as race cars from race karts. There is a tubular steel frame, a seat, a chain-driven motor, pedals, a handlebar and possibly a gearshift. Except for the body panels, wheels and tires, that’s all. There isn’t even a real suspension, the frame is the suspension. And the various tubes need to be adjusted to make the car run. And that’s why, even if you’re not a kid, it’s worth considering a running activity.

Go-karting need not be dangerous and is not only for children

Of course karting, like any other form of motorsport, involves risks. But the participants are not helpless. Whether adults or children, drivers wear helmets, race suits, gloves, sturdy shoes and neck and rib protection, notes Sima Racing. Although the seat is not equipped with seat belts, it is tight enough that they are not needed, R&T said. And while karts can reach high speeds, drivers don’t start at the most extreme speeds. Just like in autocross racing, you arrive at the front of the pack. Starting as a child is almost a requirement to become a professional, but adults also benefit from participating. Since the race karts are very simple, they are easy to drive and can be used to develop mechanical skills. But that simplicity also means that small changes can lead to big changes on the track, R&T says. Change a single tube or alter the position of the saddle, and the handling changes dramatically. This leads to one of the most important lessons in karting: how to drive properly. Riding a go-kart is an experience for the whole body, literally, writes R&T. You have to control weight transfer and grip not only by turning the handlebars, but also by moving your body. Sometimes taking a turn means turning the wheel and shifting your weight from left to right. It’s just a matter of knowing where the handle is and how to use it. All this explains why so many top racers started out in karting. As R&T pilot Memo Gidley explains: If you are successful in karting, you can drive anything.

What is the cost of participation?

Another positive aspect of karting is the cost. Compared to many other forms of motorsport, karting is very affordable. However, it is also not very cheap. Before you buy, think about the racing class you want to compete in. Some classes have special constructions to make the terrain as flat as possible. It also simplifies the process of buying and/or building a kart, which is usually the most expensive investment. The new race karts are available as scooters, without engine or ready-made. The exact cost varies depending on the class of race, but $5,000 is a good estimate. But if you’re just starting out, you can buy a used car if it’s less than five years old, notes Sima Racing. This is because the forces exerted during the race physically alter the material properties of the frame tubes. After a few years, the tubes need to be replaced because they lose their crackle, R&T explains. When replacing parts, always budget for spare parts and tools. As well as proper safety equipment, fuel and tires, and transportation for anything and everything. In addition, there are registration and membership fees. Overall, the average driver spends about $10,000 to $15,000 a year, R&T reports. If you don’t want to go karting every year or don’t want to spend that much money, try taking classes at a local school.
