A good range bag is a must for every gun owner, and they come in a variety of sizes and styles, depending on how you prefer to carry your firearms and ammo. Some people prefer to carry their guns in a hard case, while others go for a bag that secures their weapons using Velcro. There is no “one size fits all” solution, but it is important to make sure your range bag is durable, light, and waterproof.
It’s no secret that you should take the time to scope out a good range bag before you buy. What you need is going to depend on the type of range activities you’re involved in, and what kind of gear you need to carry. So what should you be on the lookout for when looking for the best range bag for you? Here are five of the most important things to consider:
Luke Cuenco 04.30.21 Shooting bags are a versatile part of almost every gun owner’s inventory. While we have different preferences for the gear we carry on a daily basis, there are many things that make a shooting bag ideal no matter what type of shooting you are doing. Today we’re taking a look at some of the best trucker bags on the market. Table of contents
1. 5.11 Tactical Range Ready Bag 43L – Editor’s Choice
I personally have had a Range Ready 43L bag for many years and it is my main all purpose shooting bag. The bag itself is designed for a variety of pistols, but I have found in the past that it also works well for some SBRs, PDWs and machine guns. The detachable ammo pouch is handy for going to competitions when you don’t want to carry all your tools and other gear, and the pouch is compatible with the included shoulder strap, which can be swapped out for use with the whole pouch. The side pockets are ideal for storing tools, and the bag has a removable brass catch bag and a water bottle pocket that can hold a large can of solvent or repair oil. The 5.11 Tactical 43L Range Ready Multi-Purpose Bag is a versatile shooting bag, and it’s on sale for a very competitive price of just $99.99 on the 5.11 Tactical website. Benefits / all the features you need and want, and none that you don’t. Disadvantages/not included are many other features of other bags, such as. B. the possibility of attaching patches, or weapon pockets included. The best in business and will probably live longer than you.
2. MidwayUSA Range Backpack – The best bag for beginners
MidwayUSA brand backpacks and shooting bags are a great place to start, especially if you are a new gun owner. If so, you probably just bought your first firearm for self-defense, but it probably won’t be your last as you continue to train with it and learn more about what works for you in a firearm. The Midway USA Shooting Backpack is a quick and convenient way to carry up to 3 rifles, magazines, ammo and everything else you need on the shooting range. Each MidwayUSA Range Bag has 3 gun compartments that can be stored horizontally in the bottom of the pack. I love this, because my bag tends to get even messier after a shoot if I don’t put everything in separate bags. The backpack allows you to easily carry all of your weapons, ammunition and gear and leaves both hands free to open doors, carry gun bags or carry targets to and from the range. MidwayUSA sells the Range Bag backpack for $112, but it often sells for just under $100. So this is a good option to start with if you’re not sure what you need, or if you’re looking for a gift for a new gun owner. Benefits / Plenty of room for guns, ammo, cleaning kits and extra gear. Disadvantages: The tapered design means there is less room at the top for ammo or toolboxes. Conclusion/ Excellent bag for beginners, easy to carry.
3. VERTX COF Range Bag – Pistol Choose
VERTX has many shooting bags for sale, but I think one of the best is the COF Range Bag. I’d say this is an essential gun bag, which is great for carrying a gun or two to the range, as well as a couple boxes of ammo. The bag is made of durable nylon and also includes a cleaning mat in case you need it on the shooting range. If you choose the heavy version of the bag, you get two ammo boxes to store loose ammo, or the light version, which contains only one ammo box. Both sizes of the COF sports shooting bag include a holder for six magazines. So I think this is a great shooting sports bag if you plan on training with a rifle. The Vertx COF shooting bag is available for $139.99 for the light version or $186.99 for the heavy version. Benefits / Special storage space for weapon, ammunition and magazines – very clear Cons/ Very limited space, the bag is the size of a large lunch box, and you can’t bring everything you might need on the shooting range. In short, ideal for targeted training with one or two pistols.
4. G.P.S. Backpack
Unlike the previous bag, this one can hold a lot of weapons and apparently an entire workbench. The G.P.S. Executive backpack accommodates up to 5 weapons in a unique foam cushion that fits snugly inside the bag. There’s also a removable ID tag to keep your membership card in sight, and double-sided pockets to store patio magazines or extra tools. Finally, there are a few pockets to store ammunition. What I love about the G.P.S. backpack is that it also has a loop system to store paper targets in case you want or need to bring your own. Another great feature that you won’t see on many other bags or backpacks is that the G.P.S. has 16 different removable patches for each of the Velcro pockets. This allows you to customize your bag to your liking and easily know where everything is. The G.P.S Executive backpack retails for $179.99, but I think the high price is worth it considering the number of features it has. Benefits / Lots of storage space for everything related to the landfill. Disadvantages/costs, not suitable for rifle shooters. Conclusion / If you are planning a long day at the shooting range, this backpack should have everything you need to prepare.
5. Lifeguard American Classic Double Short Barrel Pistol Case/Firearms Case – Choice of Gun
I shoot guns often myself, so I have to give my fellow shooters some love. This bag is specially designed for two short barrel or AR pistols and is very compact. Made of durable 600D PVC nylon, the bag features lockable zippers on both gun compartments to prevent them from sliding around in the bag and colliding with each other. The bag has several external pockets for magazines, tools and ammunition. The bag can be carried on a shoulder strap or a padded handle. The bag is available in different colors, including M81 dark camo, dark flat earth, obsidian black, OD green, and gray. Savior Equipment also sells larger gun bags if you need a decent bag for long guns, but this SBR double gun bag/pouch costs $49.99. For / Not as big and bulky as a normal sized pistol holster Fits pistols and rifles. Drawbacks/little exterior pockets for extra ammo/magazine storage. All in all, it’s a great solution for field trips with SBR or AR pistols.
What should be in each shooting bag
Sport shooting bags are a great way to stay organized at the shooting range. I’m a big believer in organization, and I think in the long run it makes it less likely that you’ll forget something at the range, which could lead to a premature end to the shooting session. I always have a few essentials on hand in my main shooting bag, so I’m prepared for anything. This is what I usually always have in my bag:
- Simple weapon cleaning kit
- Small hammer of 4 ounces
- A pair of pliers
- Cleaning cloths
- Weapons oil / CLP
- Hearing protection and replacement equipment
- Eye protection and spare equipment
- Spare batteries
- First aid kit
- Replacement camera flags
- Supports for mounting targets
- water bottle
I recommend that you have at least a spare pair of glasses and ears and a first aid kit with your supplies. These three elements are the foundation of a safe day at the shooting range, and you’ll make a lot more friends if you have spare protective gear they can take with them in case they forget theirs. Overall, shooting bags are a great thing and an important part of the shooting experience, so choose wisely!

If you shoot a lot, yes, you will need a shooting bag. This will help you remember what basic equipment you should always have on the shooting range. Hearing and eye protection are essential, as are basic tools, first aid and, of course, ammunition.
Can you carry a firearm in a gunny bag?
Carrying a gun in a shooting bag is a sensitive issue. You just need to know what is legal in your area before you do something like this. Remember, it is your responsibility to know and follow the law.
