More individuals are getting outdoors and enjoying some kind of leisure, whether it’s camping, fishing, hunting, bicycling, riding ATVs, and other activities, as shown by recent history. Consider any outdoor activity, and you can guarantee that more people are participating today than ever before. The outdoor industry has taken note, and numerous groups and associations have banded together to assist promote outdoor recreation and the concept of getting everyone outside.

The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) is the largest recreation alliance, with 33 member organizations representing over 110,000 companies, working to support the development of the outdoor recreation economy and outdoor recreation activities. The Together Outdoors alliance is being formed as a key component of ORR to assist the outdoor industry in increasing awareness of equity and inclusion problems in outdoor activities, as well as to offer education and knowledge to help remove current obstacles. This implies that the alliance will offer training, resources, and funding to those involved in all types of outdoor activities. This assistance is intended to assist manufacturers, retailers, service providers, stakeholders, and people, whether CEOs or parts-counter employees, in promoting equality and inclusion in all kinds of outdoor recreation. After all, everyone has access to the Great Outdoors.

From a news statement dated June 8, 2021:

ORR has formed a partnership with THOR Industries, one of the world’s biggest recreational vehicle manufacturers, to guarantee that everyone feels accepted in all aspects of outdoor recreation, from camping and fishing to boating, off-roading, archery, and more. As part of a multi-year commitment, THOR is financing the coalition’s development, formation, and early activities.

“A key goal of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable is to increase access to outdoor recreation,” said Lindsey Davis, Vice President of ORR. “Achieving that objective requires more than just constructing infrastructure and establishing new parks; it also demands adopting policies and partnerships that guarantee inclusiveness and access for all Americans, regardless of who they are or where they reside. ORR is pleased to be a part of this important project, and we look forward to assisting in the development of Together Outdoors to ensuring that outdoor recreation is accessible to all.”

Bob Martin, THOR President and CEO, stated, “We’ve listened and heard many of the deep and long-running issues and challenges that underrepresented groups experience while seeking outdoor adventure.” “Enjoying and appreciating nature is beneficial to one’s physical and emotional well-being, and natural spaces should be inviting to everyone. Everyone is invited to Go Everywhere and Stay Anywhere since THOR is dedicated to advancing outdoor equality and inclusion.”

UTVMore individuals are getting outdoors and enjoying life off the main road by utilizing a machine, such as an RV, ATV, boat, or truck.

The groundwork for the coalition started last year through listening sessions THOR Industries conducted with under-represented individuals in the outdoors and other Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) leaders. Based on their lived experiences, the common learning was that under-represented people often feel unwelcome in the outdoors. With increased awareness and understanding, THOR partnered with ORR to establish a coalition to help impact all sectors of outdoor recreation. The coalition has been and will continue to be designed, operated and informed by close partnerships with experts and others on the frontlines of creating a more inclusive outdoor experience for all. The Together Outdoors’ coalition will be shaped by input from an advisory committee of grassroots organizers and advocates with deep experience in the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in their pursuit of outdoor recreation and adventure, along with input from outdoor business leaders, federal agencies and conservation organizations.

“Fishing has the power to unite people, heal our bodies and minds, relieve stress, and develop character,” states Diane Bristol, Senior Director, Employee & Community Engagement for Simms Fishing Products. “Everyone should have access to these advantages, which means we welcome all anglers, no matter the gear in their quiver – or their ability, race, gender, religion, nationality or political ideology.”

WalleyeFishing is a wonderful outdoor activity for anybody who enjoys being outdoors.

“Our public lands and waterways are accessible to everyone, and the recreational boating industry is dedicated to making the great outdoors a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all,” said Kate Plush, vice president of human resources at the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). “As we scale up our efforts to remove all obstacles to outdoor recreation throughout the nation, we look forward to working with our coalition partners.”

Bowhunting, according to Matt Kormann, CEO of the Archery Trade Association, “connects individuals to the outdoors and their table in a really personal and intimate way.” “Anyone should be allowed to participate in this life-changing opportunity without restriction. We understand, support, and are dedicated to the work that must be done to guarantee that everyone, whether entering the woods or a store, feels welcome and safe.”

The National Marine Manufacturers Association, National Forest Foundation, Motorcycle Industry Council, Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, Brunswick, Simms Fishing Products, Archery Trade Association, The Recreate Responsibly Coalition, Hipcamp, and The National Association of State Parks have all pledged to join the Together Outdoors coalition.
