The 5 Best AR-15s Under $1,000

For the last 10 years, AR-15s have been an inescapable part of the American gun culture. With their affordable price points and capability to be adapted to a variety of different roles, AR-15s quickly became a favorite among gun enthusiasts.

Our site is the first place many people turn when they want to buy an AR-15. We’ve researched and written thousands of products about AR-15s, and we have the experience to pick out the absolute best rifles. That’s why we love this AR-15, because it’s not only one of the best values among AR-15s, it’s one of the most reliable. The Magpul MB15 features a 20-inch handguard, complete with rails and a Picatinny top rail. It’s not an AR-15, so it doesn’t have the rifle’s traditional long-range accuracy, but it’s accurate enough to hit targets out to 200 yards.

The AR-15 is a rifle that is becoming more and more popular every year, but which options are best? There are hundreds of AR-15’s available to shooters, but which are the best? Here are my top choices, based on popularity, quality, and price.

The fate of the AR-15 rifle always seems to be in play when it comes to politics. Every big election brings a tidal wave of ban demands from people who would rather take away your rights than do anything to solve the real problems. As you gear up for the upcoming pre-sale event at the gun store, we want to help you save a few pennies before prices go up due to demand. Here’s our list of the five best AR-15s under $1,000. Updated at 13. May 2021 It’s been a few years since we gave you a rundown of the top 5 AR-15s under $1,000, and the gun world has gone wild. It is difficult, but not impossible, for us to follow the evolution of the sub-sized AR. Do you need help? If you are looking for a new gun, we have some tips to get you started. Take a look. Three AR-15 rifles under $1,000 are available now. During the boom in AR sales a few years ago, everyone who had a vise started making ARs. This is not necessarily a bad thing. However, this makes it much harder for potential buyers to understand which companies know how to make quality rifles and which companies have recently switched production from selfie sticks to AR-15s. Even if you eliminate the companies that recycle burrito wrappers into tie wraps, there are still plenty of good deals to be found, and this list is just a starting point. We can only choose five guns, so instead of getting upset that your gun isn’t listed, please let us know in the comments how you shoot your best gun. Let’s get one thing straight. For this list, I’m going to assume every dollar of additional features and quality based on the actual retail price of $1,000 rather than the manufacturer’s often inflated recommended retail price. This allows me to insert a few requests that exceed our $1,000 limit. With that in mind, here’s my list of the top 5 AR-15s for price.

1. Smith & Wesson M&P15 or

Smith & Wesson M&P15 OR word-image-6837 Part of the name OR stands for Optics Ready, and it is. This rifle made my list because it’s a solid rifle, ready for aftermarket optics and sights, with no bells and whistles or other things to remove before you can start installing it. The length of the conductor goes all the way to the receiver, and the gas block is also a short segment of the conductor whose height exactly matches the conductor of the receiver. This allows for easy installation of permanent or tiltable visors. While it’s not too difficult to remove the gas block with the fixed fly, I prefer not to use it at all. It has a 16-inch barrel with a 1:9 cruising speed, making it great for most common 5.56mm bullets. The barrel, bushing and bolt carrier are chrome plated for long life. The trigger is heavy, but not squeaky. In the default configuration it works fine, at least until you feel like installing a match replacement. Overall, this rifle is a good mix of simple features, but all the major components are good for long-term use. You’re not paying for things you’re likely to modify or replace anyway, so it’s a great platform for modifications over time. The maximum price for the 811003 is $1,069, but I see them online for just over $890. You can always add the Crimson Trace Red Dot visor. That’s not a bad idea.

2. Rock River Arms LAR-15 Entry Tactical

Rock River Arms LAR-15 Entry Tactical. I have used and abused two different Rock River Arms rifles over the years, and both have stood the test of time. They make good material. Most LAR-15 models cost more than $1,000, but the LAR-15 Entry Tactical is a good deal. You always shoot AKs? Check out our list of the six best AKs for your money here. This model includes a Wylde cartridge, which allows you to shoot both 5.56mm NATO and .223 Remington without sacrificing accuracy. The 16-inch barrel is chrome moly treated for durability, and the pistol grip has a rubber Hogue coating. It is equipped with Rock River Arms’ standard two-stage trigger mechanism. You can still find it for less than $950. Rock River Arms RRAGE Carbinewith an MSRP of only $760. word-image-6839 If you want an RRA rifle with a lower MSRP than the grandiose brand, you owe it to yourself to check out the new RRAGE rifles with MSRPs starting at $760. Yes, you read that right. Besides, the gun is very nice. They will sell like hotcakes, so grab one. I’m going to do it, and I’m going to top it off with a Trijicon TR24 AccuPoint 1-4×24 Dual-Illuminated Scope because I can. America!

3. Colt rifle LE6920

One Colt LE6920 with Magpul accessories. word-image-6841 Not too long ago, it would have been a cardinal sin to exclude the Colt from the list of top five AR rifles. As Colt tries to remain a viable and profitable gun manufacturer, there are reasons not to include this gun. How can you recommend a product that may not appear in a few months? And that’s where the problem lies. Not long ago, Colt announced that it was discontinuing production of consumer AR rifles to focus on becoming a major supplier to the US military. However, the LE6920 is a rifle with a good reputation, and the AR-15 design is now so standardized that there is little risk in purchasing this rifle. It seems that parts and maintenance will never be an issue. There are still a few on the market. Weighing just under seven kilograms, this model is slightly heavier than the others, which many consider an advantage. It is equipped with a standard A2 gas block and A2 front sight, as well as a Magpul MBUS rear sight. Coincidentally, after I submitted a draft of this article, I went to the shooting range and in the next lane a patrolman from South Carolina was shooting his brand new Colt LE6920, you guessed it. He ended up buying a model with Magpul accessories, but that’s what this article is about. Buy a reliable basic rifle, consisting of basic, high-quality components such as the barrel, casing, breech, and guide group. Over time, you can update and add to it according to your budget. The maximum price was $999, and you can find it on the street for less.

4. Sig Sauer M400 SRP

Sig Sauer M400 SRP word-image-6842 Like the Smith & Wesson M&P15 OR, the Sig M400 SRP (Sight Ready Platform) is designed with optics in mind. Like Smith & Wesson, it also doesn’t come with sights, under the assumption that if you buy this gun, you want to invest every dollar in the gun platform itself, not in parts you might not use. This is another model that disappeared from the catalog in the cheapest version. You can still buy some M400 rifles from Sig, but they have some additional features that increase the price. What I liked about this rifle is that the barrel has a 1:7 twist ratio, which allows longer (and therefore heavier) bullets to be used. A higher rotation speed allows good stabilization of 75- and 77-gram bales. During my testing, I found no noticeable negative effect of the 1:7 screw spacing on the accuracy of conventional 55 gram ammo. There are a few more things I liked about this gun. The barrel is nitride treated for fantastic corrosion resistance and durability. You’ll also notice that it comes with a Sig pistol grip, which I like much better than the standard Mil-Spec grip that most ARs come with. The maximum price was $1,054, but if you search online, you can find them for around $900. If I had the rifle version, I’d probably install the Vortex Optics Razor AMG UH-1 holographic scope.  If I were to choose one of the modern versions, like the M400 TREAD, I would want to do that and add a 3x magnifier.  Either that, or Sig’s electro-optical telescope.

5. CMMG Mk4 T

CMMG Mk4 T word-image-6843 This model was selected for the list because of its appearance and performance. It’s even better if you get advanced features for that money. The barrel is floating and the CMMG RKM11 KeyMod grip is mounted around it. I recently started using a CMMG Mk4 rifle with this grip and it is fantastic. The KeyMod system allows direct mounting of KeyMod compatible accessories and the short Picatinny rail segments are only used where necessary. The result is a thin and light hand protector. All slots for picatinny rails you’ll probably never use, so as not to add weight and ruin your hands. Unlike the other models shown here, this model has a continuous rail at the top for maximum flexibility in placing your optics and accessories. KeyMod holes are available on the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock handles if you want to add something like a tilt front handle. You can find this gun for around $900.

Honourable mentions

Because it is so close to our totally arbitrary price point, I have to mention the FNH USA FN 15 Carbine. FN makes billions and billions of rifles and machine guns for our soldiers in uniform, and now they are targeting the commercial market. Although the production lines are split between commercial and military orders, the processes, raw materials and equipment are the same, so if you take the FN 15, you get a true mil-spec AR-15. If you search carefully, you can find the FN 15 for around $1,029, which is very close to our budget limit for this list. Brownell’s retro AR-15 is as close as you can get to Stoner’s original design. word-image-6845 And I should mention that Brownell has a nice retro AR. The BRN-601®AR-15 rifle follows the design of the iconic 601 rifle that entered service with the U.S. Air Force and other military units in Southeast Asia in the early 1960s. The rifle is made from entirely new parts, and the internals and barrels closely resemble Eugene Stoner’s original design. These beautiful rifles, made in caliber 5.56, cost about $100. If you are looking for the best AR-15 for hunting on this list, the CMMG has a longer barrel and may be a better choice for predator hunting. To be fair, the AR platform is so widely used that excellent shotguns can be made from it, and in many calibers. Take a rifle from this list, add a top of the line .300 Blackout cartridge or the new 350 Legend Hot cartridge, and you have a top of the line rifle for deer hunting. Another thing to think about: how many AR-15s should you have? I hope this list helps you find new ways to do things, because we all know the answer is different. That’s my preference. What do you think? Tom McHale is the author of the Insanely Practical Guides series of books, which provide exciting, accessible and practical shooting instruction for both beginners and experienced shooters. His books are available in print and electronic form on Amazon. word-image-6847When it comes to buying a new AR-15, many people don’t want to spend a lot of money. While $1,000 is a lot of money to spend on a weapon of war, there is a huge difference between a $700 AR-15 and a $1,000 AR-15. If you’re interested in a better AR-15 without breaking the bank, then you’re in luck. I’ve found five rifles that cost under $1,000. They are all excellent options, and will serve you well in any situation.. Read more about gun under $1,000 and let us know what you think.
