If you’re in the market for a midsize sedan and you’re leaning toward the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, check out the 2021 Hyundai Sonata before making a decision. The Sonata has recently been redesigned, it looks good, drives very smoothly and is even available with a very clever, but also very useless Smart Park feature.
What is a smart park?
A smart feature of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata allows you to remotely park your car when it is in the desired parking spot. Hyundai says the vehicle can travel up to 3 meters in any direction when operated with the Smart Park buttons on the key fob. What’s more, this feature is only available on the top-of-the-line limited edition version of the Sonata, which thankfully is standard.

How does the smart park work?
Smart Parking uses the Sonata’s electronic gearbox and steering system to steer the car, and its parking sensors to detect any object in front of or behind the car, whether it’s moving or standing still.
APPROPRIATE: Just as the Hyundai Sonata is one of the safest cars on the road…..
Is it working properly?
During the week I spent in the 2021 Sonata Limited, I found the Smart Park feature to work well, but mostly as a gimmick. When I figured out how to use it, I was a little disappointed that it took almost 30 seconds to remote start and it actually started. First world problems, I know.
But if you need to park in a busy parking lot, say in a shopping mall, where other cars are waiting for you, no one will think it’s cool if your Hyundai pulls into the lot by itself, and in a straight line at that. And that’s another part: The Sonata can only be driven forwards or backwards with the Smart Park function. So don’t expect anyone in the neighborhood to be impressed by a hands-free, parallel parking maneuver.

APPROPRIATE: Skip the 2020 Mazda6 and buy a Hyundai Sonata instead.
What is the value of a smart park?
As far as I know, the smart parking feature is mainly for situations where you need to park in a narrow space between two cars and you couldn’t open the door to park. Either that, or you have a very small garage to park your $35,000 Hyundai in.
Outside of these two rare instances, the Smart Park feature is more of a fun trick to show off to your friends or your indifferent girlfriend who would rather sit in a hot car than watch the car magically move with the push of a button. Sure, it’s a cool feature that’s fun to play with, but during the time I was in the car, I honestly didn’t figure out how to use it in everyday life.
