The 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 Gives the Starter Bike More Bandwidth

If you’re looking for a reliable and affordable cruiser, the Honda Rebel series is a good place to start. And thanks to their low-powered engines, the Rebel 300 and 500 also make excellent entry-level bikes for beginners. In 2021, however, Honda gives its entry-level cruiser a little more power with the Rebel 1100. And how does this new model perform?

Motorcyclist reports that the 2021 Rebel 1100 leans slightly to the left for a Honda cruiser, but it’s not undesirable.

While the current Rebel 500’s light weight and 471cc engine make it ideal for beginners, many riders are switching to more powerful models. According to Honda, 88 percent of Rebel 500 buyers do so within the first 18 months of ownership, reports Cycle World. And if they want a cruiser, that means buying non-Honda models like the Indian Scout Sixty or the Harley-Davidson Iron 883.

So the 2021 Rebel 1100 is one way to keep buyers with enough capacity in Honda’s inventory. And he does so with a modified version of the Africa Twin’s engine, reports RideApart. The 1,084cc liquid-cooled parallel rotor is slightly modified on the Rebel 1100. Power is 87 hp and 72 lb-ft, compared to 100 hp and 78 lb-ft for the Adventure Bike.

But even though it’s less powerful, VisorDown says it’s more responsive at lower revs thanks to several tweaks. And his African heritage has another advantage. Like the ADV, the Honda Rebel 1100 is available with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, reports Autoblog. And if you want to operate the DCT manually, the bike has handlebar-mounted paddles, reports Ultimate motorcycle.

A big engine means a big empty weight. While the 2021 Honda Rebel 500 weighs 408 pounds, the Rebel 1100 with the manual transmission weighs 487 pounds. With the DCT, that number jumps to 509 pounds, reports Motorcyclist.

However, the larger engine also has more features. The 2021 Rebel 1100 features multiple riding modes, traction control, wheelie control, engine brake control and cruise control, Rider reports. It also has an under-seat storage compartment with a USB port and standard ABS. The latter is optional on the Rebel 300 and 500.

More strength and weight does not necessarily mean more harassment

Although it weighs more than the smaller models, the Honda Rebel 1100 2021 is otherwise quite similar in size. The 27.5-inch saddle makes it easy for smaller riders to put their leg over it. And compared to some competing cruisers, the Rebel 1100 has a generous suspension, reports RevZilla. It goes up to 4.8 inches in the front and 3.7 inches in the back.

And despite the extra power and mass, the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 remains a lightweight, reports Cycle World. Driving modes allow you to adjust the engine power. And in the user mode, you can also set the intensity of the influence of the draw control. But even outside of riding modes, the Rebel 1100 is considered the most versatile mid-size cruiser we’ve ever ridden.

It’s light and agile, and while it’s not a sportbike, it handles canyons well for cruisers, reports RevZilla. And the brakes are powerful, with excellent feedback. And while the manual transmission struggles with a slipping clutch, the DCT works perfectly, reports Ultimate Motorcycle.

While the ride can be a bit challenging for tall drivers, the overall ergonomics are pretty good, according to RideApart. And even on rough asphalt, the Rebel 1100 rides comfortably. However, the footpegs may be a bit narrow for some, as Bike World reports. And if you plan on spending long hours in the saddle, you might want to upgrade your saddle, RideApart reports. Fortunately, there are many accessories available.

Is the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 still a good entry-level bike?

With a larger engine and additional features, the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 is significantly more expensive than other Rebels. The Rebel 1100 starts at $9299 in manual version; the DCT transmission is a $700 option. By comparison : The Rebel 500 starts at $6599 with ABS. But should beginners consider a bigger engine?

APPROPRIATE: The Honda CB550 is an underrated super classic.

Ultimately, the answer depends on your personal comfort level. For example, I found that the 555-pound Indian Scout Beaver was at the upper limit of my comfort zone in terms of weight. And since I got a motorcycle license a few years ago, the idea of a 10844 twin-cylinder cruiser is not intimidating. But for someone who has never ridden a motorcycle, that’s not necessarily the case.

However, if you’re considering trading in your Rebel 300 or 500, the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 is a good choice. And with these power-adjustable riding modes, the bike is fun for beginners and veterans alike, reports Cycle World.
