Smoke Pot? GM Might Hire You

If you’re a smoker and you want to work at General Motors, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of this company. If you’re a non-smoker who doesn’t mind working at a legendary auto maker, there’s also a good chance you’ve heard of this company. Both are called Caliber Staffing Group, and they’re both as different as night and day.

If you like marijuana enough to smoke it, there are probably a few things you don’t like about GM (saying the company is a pet peeve of yours), but would you work for them?

If you have ever wanted to work for General Motors, you might be pretty excited with the announcement this morning that the automaker is looking for applicants to join its staff. According to the Detroit News, the automaker plans to add 600 new jobs to its Detroit-Hamtramck headquarters over the next three years. The positions will pay as much as $125,000 a year, which means that GM is looking for candidates that will be able to help guide the automaker toward a sustainable future.

Yes, GM may employ you if you use marijuana, but not because of it. GM is now in urgent need of fresh employees to fill in for assembly line workers who are enjoying summer holidays. It makes pickup trucks in its assembly facilities in Flint, Michigan, and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Flint needs 450 temporary employees, while Fort Wayne requires 275.

GM does not employ marijuana users.

It does not, however, employ marijuana users. Potential employees are subjected to a drug test to see whether they have ever used marijuana. Your application is placed in the circular file if you test positive. However, according to the Detroit Free Press, changes may be on the way.

Eric Welter and Rich LeTourneau, UAW shop chairmen, told the Freep that GM’s marijuana policy is forcing it to lose out on recruiting chances. It’s possible that it’s time to reconsider the concept. Particularly now that marijuana is legal in Michigan.

Possession of marijuana in Indiana carries a sentence to prison.

Indiana, on the other hand, is a different story. Possession of any quantity of marijuana is punishable by imprisonment. So, although a policy reform in Flint may make sense, it’s a different thing in Fort Wayne. When asked about the policy change, GM spokeswoman Dan Flores merely said the matter had been “addressed internally.”

Over 5,100 GM hourly employees are members of the Flint UAW Local 598. Despite low turnover, the Silverado and Sierra factory need approximately 100 temporary employees each week. However, finding qualified candidates is becoming more difficult. It’s a miracle that 20-25 people can fill those 100 positions.

Hair samples are used by GM to track out marijuana. It may take weeks for symptoms to appear after smoking marijuana. It deters individuals, particularly younger people, from applying for employment at the factory, according to Welter. There are, however, additional deterrents.

The $16.67 beginning salary at GM may possibly be a factor in the low number of applications.

The $16.67 beginning hourly wage is just marginally more than McDonald’s. Applicants must also be willing to work a range of shifts. Furthermore, after the summer, there is no assurance of full-time work.

Unfortunately, GM is dealing with additional issues that are delaying manufacturing of pickup trucks. Problems with component suppliers, as well as the semiconductor chip scarcity, are wreaking havoc. Due to a shortage of chips, GM is already phasing out cylinder deactivation fuel management.

What’s going on at Ford?

Ford has holding lots full of completed 2021 Ford F-150 pickups waiting for chips to finish the otherwise finished vehicles across town in Dearborn. Most automobile manufacturers across the globe are dealing with this issue. However, the lack of accessible assistance exacerbates the difficulties that all producers face.

If you live in or around Flint or Fort Wayne, you may recall a period when hourly earnings at GM factories were extremely appealing. However, with the implementation of two-tiered salaries, new employees are no longer lured by higher-than-average pay.
