New Year Resolution – Exercise Your RV Generator

The new year is here, which means it’s time to make a New Year’s resolution. For example, many campers choose to exercise more during their RV trips. B. by walking more. Most RV owners know how to winterize their generator, but not everyone knows that it’s just as important to get it running once in a while. This is what we call your van generator training.

Why you should exercise your RV generator

  • Running the generator once a month keeps it lubricated and prevents carbon build-up.
  • The heat released by the operation of the generator also eliminates the accumulation of water. Humidity in your aquarium is never a good idea. It will make things rusty, and you want to avoid that.

Gasoline and diesel begin to decompose after about 30 days of inactivity. Gasoline begins to harden, causing problems, and diesel begins to mold and gel in cold weather. So how are you going to stop it? First of all, you need to use a quality fuel stabilizer. You’ll also need to fill your fuel tank and, of course, exercise on your RV generator.

How to exercise the RV generator

First, make sure there is no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Check the alternator exhaust system and make sure everything is in order. If you see any damage, do not start the generator!

If you have a portable RV generator, make sure the exhaust is directed away from the campsite. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous because you cannot smell it. If you inhale too much, you will pass out and eventually die.

Therefore, you should have a carbon monoxide detector in your van. Once you’re sure it’s running, it’s time to start the generator.

As you can read in this manual, Cummins Onan recommends running the generator at 50% of its rated power (load) for at least two hours each month. Note that this is just an example, other manuals may recommend other methods.

What is the load on your alternator and how do you find it? Power rating or load index indicates how much power (watts) your generator can provide. In most cases, the load on your generator will be indicated on the front or rear panel. You can also use Google to find the user manual, which will surely mention the download of your generator.

Common load values are 5000W, 4500, 4000, 2500, 2000, etc. You may also want to know that 1000 watts equals 1 kilowatt. Here are some links to user manuals of common brands:

So if we use this Onan example for a 4000 watt generator, you would have to discharge it from 2000 watts in two hours. This can be done by using one high power device or by connecting several low power devices. I found a chart online that shows the typical power consumption of the device. Look at this. You should also be aware that it is preferable to have a two-hour training session rather than several shorter sessions.

Final Thoughts

Commissioning your RV generator is an important step that you should not miss. Here are the steps again in abbreviated form:

  • Make sure there is no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Find the guide you need with the help of Google.
  • Determine the load on your generator.
  • Use the quick tip I gave you to find the right chapter.
  • Follow the instructions for using the generator.

Good luck!

You need a motorcycle, fully equipped, that fits your limited lifestyle. The storage compartments and interior should provide enough room to accommodate everything you need, no matter what the weather. It is always advisable to have large storage tanks and enough energy sources to make your storage easy to dry and reduce your costs.

Most people who love this lifestyle don’t wander around all the time. Many of them camp a month and travel occasionally. To find out how much it costs to live full time in a mobile home park, in parks where you can have a monthly payment. You may be asked to pay separately for electricity and cable because your needs are different from those of vacationers.

One of the biggest challenges for families is finding a van that is perfect for everyone, but not too expensive. When you buy a motorcycle, you should always consider the cost of maintenance and fuel.

In general, Class A recreational vehicles with gasoline engines are more cost effective than recreational vehicles with diesel engines for repairs. Their parts are cheaper and easier to find. Since most gas-powered RVs use a Ford F-53 chassis and Triton engine, you don’t have to drive your van to an RV repair shop.

The Thor Challenger 37DS is the ideal RV for a family that lives full time on gas. With this 10 bedroom motorhome, you can handle your family’s growth. There’s plenty of room for a crib, and a tub-shower makes bathing less stressful for little ones.

Your kids and teens will be happy with a bunk bed they can call their own. The bunk beds are equipped with TV preparation, tablet holders and USB charging ports to stay connected to your digital life. While they enjoy their free time, you and your partner can watch your favorite shows on the 32-inch TV next to the main bed, which allows you to tilt your head into a sitting position.

When you reach adolescence, your children may want more space. The upper bunk of the driver’s compartment accommodates one of them. To survive your son’s endless appetite, the camper has a 22-cubic-foot refrigerator and a rooftop dry goods storage area. There is also an outdoor shower where your kids can rinse off their sports equipment before taking it inside.

When they go to college, the bunk bed turns into a closet for extra storage. If you and your partner are traveling in the empty nest, make sure you keep a log of your favorite family camping trips. In 10 to 15 years, you’ll have grandchildren coming to spoil you.

Camping in the woods is fun – especially if you have a small camper or RV that takes you to different places. I love the design and convenience of small trailers. My family and i went camping for a week. The view and camping experience was amazing!

Camping Tips

Have you ever gotten a tip that saved you hours of time & frustration? These camping tips were compiled to hopefully do just that. Some may seem like common sense while others may help you pack or stay safe. If you have a tip that could help others, please use the “Add a Tip” form below, and I’ll post your idea on this page.

Because everyone’s trip is unique, the tips were divided by category to help you locate the ideas that can help you the most. These pages are continually added to and refined based on lessons learned and input from people like you, so please check back often. These tips can help you look like a pro from tent set-up to mealtime ideas. I hope that they help make your outdoor getaway that much more fun!

Tent Tips:

Many first-time campers set up the tent for the first time in the woods. This can be a frustrating place to get acquainted with your new tent. Another eye-opener for new campers is that a 6-man tent sleeps 4 comfortably or 6 adults hip-bone to hip-bone! Depending who you are sharing a tent with this could be less than fun ;-). Some tents also recommend that you waterproof the seams prior to using it which might just come in handy if you encounter a rainy day. Check out the tent tips page for ideas on how to get the right tent set up with the right tools. Most tents are easy to assemble and use, but a little practice before the trip is worth the time and effort.

Packing Tips:

Depending on how much car space you have and how much you have to lug in the woods yourself, smart packing can make your trip a bit more enjoyable. At campsites that allow a vehicle, it’s easy to unload a cooler, charcoal, and other heavy items. At sites that are a few miles in the woods, these items are no fun to carry. Another consideration is how to pack your personal items, such as clothing and toiletries. I personally like using zip-lock bags which assures that I have a nice pair of dry socks and underwear for the next day…even if my backpack falls in the creek! If you’re camping with kids, it’s also a good idea to give them some share of the load. We like using their school backpacks and giving them their water bottle, clothes, and snacks to carry. As our boys got a little older, we eventually would even strap their sleeping bags on their packs, as well. If you pack the items ahead of time by backpack, it’s much more manageable when you get into the woods. See the packing tips page for more ideas.
