2-stroke dirt bike engine vs 4-stroke dirt bike engine Two-stroke engines have fewer moving parts and are therefore much easier to overhaul than four-stroke machines. However, two-stroke engines are known to break down more often during difficult races because the engine has to work harder due to the smaller number of parts. Preventive maintenance and rebuilding should be done at fairly regular intervals.

Two- and four-stroke engines sometimes show no visible signs of wear. Regular maintenance is always cheaper than waiting for major defects that lead to a complete rebuild of the engine head. Regular maintenance keeps even a dirty motorcycle in good condition.

To find signs that your top-of-the-line needs repair, disassemble the engine and look for small scratches on the pistons. Your bike’s owner’s manual will tell you how often you should service your bikes. You should also consider the difficulty of your rides. In general, engines with smaller displacement require more regular maintenance; two-stroke engines require more frequent maintenance than four-stroke engines.

While driving, watch for rattling sounds at low rpm that worsen and then disappear at higher rpm. Loose parts of the piston may suddenly fail. Testing for two-stroke engines includes a compression test and a visual inspection of the components.

On a four-stroke engine, there is a leak test that isolates the leaking air, determines its source and locates the problem. How To Install A Fish Finder For Top Performance In 2021

Understanding how to install a fish finder is essential to getting the most out of it. I’ve dealt with many fish finders and lots of boats, and let me tell you, there’s no reason to make it difficult. There are many ways to mount the unit and transducer, and you can connect them in a variety of ways.

The most important thing you can do is take the first step. If you want to fish at your best, you should have a fish finder on your to-do list. With this guide, you can get started!


The best new fish finder on the market is useless if you don’t have the right tools and accessories to install it. Before you compile your product list, there are a few important things you should look at first.

Check if you already have auxiliary power cables, check the mirror to see what it looks like, do you have a connection plate? And so on and so forth.

This pre-check will help you determine what to purchase, how to install the fish finder and how long the installation will take. The last thing you want to do is run to the hardware store several times when you may be on the water.

Once you have a clear idea of what you need, dive into this checklist and choose what you want.

Fish Strips

Fishing tape is a useful tool for several reasons, and if you fish a lot, you should have it anyway. You use it to route electrical cables from your equipment to your scroll battery power source. It’s a flat, malleable steel that is pliable enough that you can slide it under the barrel and pull it out. Also, wear gloves so you don’t cut yourself on the fiberglass.

Don’t skimp on the equipment. You need a good, clean mounting hole. So make sure you have fresh, sharp drills and a good quality drill bit for the installation. This will make it easier to install the fish finder.

Masking Tape

Using tape to prevent chipping and cracking of the gelcoat is a good trick I’ve learned from many people. When you drill into the fiberglass, the tape keeps the coating from cracking when the drill bit into the hull.

Fasteners and cables

If you take pride in the appearance of your boat, you should have enough fasteners and wiring bundles to get the job done properly. That way, you can make sure you don’t have a lot of loose wires.

Shrink tubing or insulating tape

You want to prevent moisture from getting into the wire connections, and the best way to do this is to use heat shrink tubing or electrical tape. Shrink tubing is the recommended method, both for safety and aesthetics, but if you don’t have that and don’t feel like traveling again, electrical tape can also be used. You can also use pipe fittings, but they offer the least protection from the elements.

Heat gun

If you are using heat shrink tubing, you will need a heat gun to push it over the connectors. When doing this, be very careful not to point the gun near the gelcoat as it will melt and discolor.

They protect your equipment by ensuring that the spikes do not damage it. There are many different products available, so consult your fishmonger’s instruction manual for recommended products.

Bring along your fasteners to make sure you have the right size bolts, washers and nuts. They should be long enough to reach under the boat or console. Sealant is also important to keep the hardware in place.

Individual arrangements

If you are installing a fish finder strobe, the manufacturer of the device will probably sell you an accessory kit that you will want to use here. If you are used to tinkering, you can build it yourself.

RAM is the most popular editing method (we’ll come back to this later), but there are some other methods. Kong and BallzOut are other methods. Just make sure the mount you choose can support the weight of your device without it falling off.

This is a smart strategy if you anticipate that the sensor will need to be moved at some point. Instead of mounting the sensor directly on the hull of the boat, mount the unit and then attach the sensor to the unit. You can now move the unit around the boat without having to remove the sensor each time.

When you install the Fishfinder software in your boat console, you have three basic strategies. The choice depends on the size of the fishfinder, the space on the console, and the size of your boat.


This is what we call a “flush” to find fish. This is the most coveted species of sea bass. It gives you a professional feel, and it creates a permanent home for the unit. Note that this method will not work for most fish-finding sites.

Cardanic suspension

The gimbal is an adjustable mount that comes with the fish finder. It is easy to mount if you have limited space; you can mount the unit higher so you can see it on the handlebars. Again, this will not work for everyone, and many consoles on newer boats tend to be plastic, so you will need to add an aluminum plate to mount the unit stably and securely.

If you want a little more flexibility and need to move your unit from time to time, third-party mounts are the way to go. If you are trying to figure out how to mount a fishfinder and need more control over placement, RAM and Kong mounts will take you almost anywhere, but they are not durable or strong, especially with heavier units.

Some of you may have a fish finder installed on the bow. If so, you need to make sure you have enough space. You will also need to choose an installation method based on how much space you have and how much you want to spend on accessories.

If you use a kayak with a fish finder at the bow, this method may also work for you. Just make sure you know if you have a fish finder on the side or on the bottom. Anglers of all types will want to look at these mounting options to determine if mounting their fish finder in the bow of the boat is the right choice for them.


I don’t think this method is that common because it requires a fairly precise boat shape, but it can work on some boats with the right plate and design. The problem is that it’s a bit remote and you can only place it at a fixed angle. If you end up with a reflection on the screen, forget it.

Cardanic suspension

If you are mounting the unit on the bow, I personally recommend a gimballed mount. This allows you to lift the sounder slightly so you can adjust the viewing angle. This gives you the flexibility you need to position yourself. The only problem is that once you install the mount, you are stuck with what you have, so make sure you get it right. This method can also take up extra storage space for the pole.

Third parties

The RAM and Kong holders are perfect if you need something that you can move around and move from one position to another. The problem is that you can’t use it if your boat has a built-in foot pedal. Be sure to choose without the rubber ball joints, as they won’t shift or fall off as easily if you find yourself in choppy water.


Deck brackets are great, they fit perfectly where you want them, they provide the right height and position for the unit, and there are many great brands. Companies like Wave Tamer and Deck-It sell deck brackets, which are essentially metal brackets that extend above the outboard motor pedal recess; just behind the pedal at the front of the boat.

To understand how to properly install a fishfinder, you must install the transducer on the housing. If you don’t install it properly, you will get poor sonar performance, which you will probably blame on the manufacturer.

Remember that the information you learn in this section does not replace the information in the manufacturer’s manual. It is only general information, but you should refer to the manual to determine where and how to install the transducer.


If you have a fiberglass hull, you must mount the sensor on the transom or in the port. In general, small units are mounted on the transom and large units are mounted on the port plate. Make sure there are no obstructions near the sensor, including temperature and speed sensors. Sensor covers are great for protecting the sensor from hooks and rocks, and although they are a bit expensive for a piece of plastic, they are worth the money you spent on your fish finder.


The most important thing to remember when using aluminum boats is that you don’t want to mount the sensor near rivets or welds, as this causes air bubbles that affect image quality. Most people will probably have to use a sensor through the wall, as they cannot read this material well.

The fish finder wiring is probably the most difficult part of installing a fish finder. Not all boats are the same, but many “how-to” guides will give you a similar feel. There are a few key points everyone should keep in mind when wiring their fish finder.

Use a wire rope to pull the wires instead of removing the trim from the boat. Remember that you can also use existing wires to pull new ones. Sometimes there are wires that are never used, you can use them to help pull or push all the new wires.

One piece of good advice I’ve learned is to add a few extra wires when you do that. If you’re already involved in the project, it’s easy to add a few extra wires and you’ll be happy to do it when you want to do something else, like put lights in the street.

When routing the cables from your trolling motor to the bow unit, make sure they don’t get tangled up in the motor. Careful and thoughtful installation is important here. Be careful when installing and temporarily attach the wires to the shaft of the trolling motor and check the motor in various positions to make sure they don’t get caught in the motor.

One wonders if Floridians will ever get tired of the vast amount of lakes, rivers, springs and miles of Atlantic and Gulf coastline the state has to offer. Are you kidding? There are far more watery getaways here than amusement park enthusiasts think. Get ready for an adventure in northern Florida.

Thirty minutes northwest of Gainesville, yes, fans of UF Gator Gainesville, lies the town of High Springs, population 6,000. While it doesn’t have the university atmosphere of Gator, residents are content to keep the landscape quiet and unpretentious.

O’Leno State Park.

An opportunity presented itself to spend 4 nights at O’Leno State Park in High Springs, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and one of the first state parks in Florida.

The 6,000-acre site includes a campground with 60 sites with electricity and water and two core group sites. Part of the park offers an interpretive audio tour (via cell phone) of the remaining historic buildings of the former Town of Keno, a historic 52-foot foot suspension bridge over the Santa Fe River, a CCC museum, a nature center and miles of biking and hiking trails.

The Santa Fe River disappears at some point in O’Leno National Park, a fascinating feature of this river. The river flows underground in limestone caves called the Bellamy Cave System and surfaces 3 miles downstream at the River Rise Reserve. The Santa Fe begins near Gainesville and extends 75 miles west before emptying into the Suwannee River.

The main goal of our trip was to explore a small but sensational part of these 75 miles.

The ridge guide

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection offers many good paddling guides. Figure 2 below shows High Springs Boating Boulevard northwest of 210 Ln and our drop-off point at Rum Island. See pages 5-6 for a good explanation of the 26-mile paddling route from Santa Fe and all access points.

Iron Cats

The seven of us were going to Santa Fe on this cold and slightly rainy morning. We decided to plan our own shuttle from start to finish. As most people know, keeping cats is not easy, so we often turned to our group. What appears to be the best intention to start early usually ends up being a dysfunctional hour because one or two “cats” can’t stick to the herd mentality. Today is no different, but such is life.

My husband, Dave, and another friend would be the shuttles. We loaded up the kayaks and headed to High Springs, 6 miles south of the national park. I left the kayaks here and held them while Dave and a friend went to the end point, Rum Island County Park, 7 miles south, to drop off one of the trucks.

The shuttle locations worked well and our herd magically joined all those who were now at the High Springs boat launch. We were ready for a 7 mile paddle down the beautiful Santa Fe River.

The adventure begins

The Santa Fe, like many rivers in North Florida, is known for its occasional floods. The national park has a wooden moat next to the river that shows the years and levels of flooding since 1964. The historic peak was recorded in 1948 at 67 feet. The winter months are generally not a time to worry about flooding.

Kayaking the Splendid Santa Fe River in High Springs, FL –

The park staff warned us to keep to the right while paddling. Mostly we did, but we also found large boulders to avoid what was at the bottom of the river.

The river was calm today. The only people we saw along the way were the seven of us, which was fine with us. With today’s overcast skies, the river was getting darker and browner, but if you looked right outside the kayak, you could see the clarity, the growth of water lettuce and longleaf grasses below you, or a turtle passing by.

We ventured less than 2 miles away when we had the honor of seeing two happy otters on the shore. We sat and watched them jump, swim back and forth, and one of them even entertained us by crawling into a fallen tree to stare at us for a moment. I tried my best to get a picture, but otters are shy and fast, preferring to play “catch me if you can” the closer we got to them.

At mile 3 we passed under another access to the river, the highway bridge. 27 Although the flow of the river is sometimes stronger due to the higher water level, today it proved to be more of a “lazy river.” This allowed us to navigate the river with ease and had time to enjoy its beauty, look for wildlife, and seek out the many springs we crossed along the way.

During this 7-mile paddle, we passed 11 Santa Fe Springs that are marked on the river map at the High Springs boat launch. The number of freshwater springs in Florida is a natural occurrence. To truly appreciate the “real Florida,” you need to go on Google and understand why the protection of aquifers is invaluable to the ecosystem.

Some springs were barely noticeable, while others caused a jolt or spinning current. We shouted when our kayaks went a little faster, or gave a little jolt when we passed one of those unknown springs bubbling beneath us.

Poe Resources

We came across the largest spring on our trip to Mile 6, Poe Springs. Poe Springs is a county park for a day for those who want to cool off in the crystal clear water. From Poe Springs, 45 million gallons of 72 degree water flows daily into the Santa Fe River. Our plan was to hike to Poe and visit this 25 foot high spring. There didn’t seem to be anyone in the park on this cool, drizzly day, so it seemed like a good time to explore.

Some of us paddled as hard as we could against the gurgling spring water that flowed into the river, but we didn’t get very far. Despite all our efforts, we could not get past the limestone gushing out from under our feet. We were convinced that with a water rise of only 15 cm, we could take advantage of this beautiful spring for bathing.

Unfortunately, this was not planned and we would not have had a sufficiently reliable base to transfer our kayaks in the spring. Next time, next time.

Wild Rivers

However, we don’t know if it was because of the weather or one of those days when the animals don’t come out. Of the two paddlewaters, we happened to see a couple of yellow-bellied turtles, jumping fish that would make any fisherman wince, and a few waterfowl-type birds. We heard owls, so we counted them.

On a river this big, you would think alligators would be a constant presence. For some reason, Santa Fe is not known for its large alligator population. That’s not to say they aren’t there, but we didn’t see them.

Naked Ed.

I think most people reading this article have never heard of John Edward Watts, a.k.a. Naked Ed. A legend in his own mind? No, Ed was actually a nice character if you read the stories of those who met him, and he is a legend to anyone who loves Santa Fe River Springs.

Ed, originally from nearby Lake City, encountered Lily Springs over 20 years ago while canoeing on the river. He fell in love with Lily Springs, a private property, but found it full of trash and litter. He asked the owner if he could clean up and take care of the mess.

Surprisingly, the landlord agreed and gave Ed a non-binding payment for 20 years. Born with a “brittle bone disease,” Ed could no longer work and became disabled. It became not only the place he loved to call home, but also the work he loved. He built a cabin of grass (perhaps one on stilts) and said he preferred spring life and his own company.

Finally, Ed installed the electricity and the telephone. He kept in touch with the canoe outpost to find out how many paddlers were out each day. Ed liked to greet the paddlers from Lily Springs and wore a loincloth out of respect for those he waited on, but the name stuck because some still thought of Ed as Naked Ed.

In 2017, Ed, in his mid-sixties, “retired.” He kept Lily Springs stomach and alcohol free and insisted that everyone he came in contact with have a pack mentality. So naked Ed wasn’t such a bad guy after all.

Battle in the nest

For the past 15 years, the North Florida Volunteer Council ( has been at the forefront of the fight against the Seven Springs Water Company to obtain a low-cost permit to withdraw one million gallons of water per day from the Santa Fe River for free.

Seven Springs Water will in turn sell it to Nestlé, which will bottle the Florida spring water at 6,000 bottles per minute and sell it to the rest of the world. That’s a lot of water and a lot of plastic! Florida continues to be swamped by other water companies who regularly get permits or are asked to do the same.

The fight to save Florida’s springs and aquifers continues. Supporters of the same goal can help get rid of plastic and reduce the need for well water by buying less bottled water. For more information on next steps, see

Rum Island and beyond.

Rum Island, an alcohol-free county park in White, gets its name from the smuggling and contraband of alcohol that took place there in the early 20th century. For us, it served as a fallback point to Santa Fe at Mile 7.

Just beyond this exit there were several springs we hoped to explore, but the seven kayaks were wet and cold, and we still had to go back.

Gilchrist Blue Springs, Ginny Spring, and Rum Island Spring were close, but will be saved for our next trip to Santa Fe. Dave and I visited Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park once, and the waters of the Blue Springs Glacier were fascinating and well worth a kayaking expedition.


After a smooth transfer to our camp, we all felt that the day had been a great success. You never know what Mother Nature will throw at you, but with the cool temperatures and raindrops here and there, we were all glad we did it and we will do it again.

Tips: When planning your paddling trip on the Santa Fe, pay attention to the level of the river, which varies with storms and rain, especially during the summer months. There are several canoe stations along the river if you want to arrange a transfer or rent a canoe. If two vehicles are available, an easy transfer can be arranged with a little research and a good map.
