Cars like the GV80 show that Genesis is dedicated to providing luxurious style at affordable prices. And not just in SUVs, but also in sedans like the Genesis G80. But is it really a cheap alternative to a car like the 2021 Mercedes E-Class, which was just voted Car of the Year by MotorTrend? That’s the question the YouTube Throttle team asked themselves.
How does the price and equipment of the 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T AWD Prestige compare to that of the Mercedes E-Class?
2021 Genesis G80 for 3/4 | Genesis
In terms of price, the 2021 Genesis G80 compares very favorably with the 2021 Mercedes E-Class. The base model of the G80, the 2.5T RWD, starts at $47,700. By comparison : The base E-Class, the rear-wheel-drive E350, starts at $54,250. The former has a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of displacement. That’s 45 hp more than the E350’s 2.0-liter turbo four, reports Car and Driver.
In contrast, the 2021 Genesis G80 in the Throttle House video is on the higher end of the scale. This is a G80 3.5T AWD sedan with the Prestige package. The sedan itself starts at $62,250, and the package adds $5400. Instead of the G80 3.5T’s four-cylinder engine, it gets a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of displacement. And, as the name suggests, it has four-wheel drive, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The counterpart to the 2021 Mercedes E-Class is the E450 4MATIC. With a starting price of $62,000, it’s even slightly cheaper than the base G80 3.5T AWD. On paper, at first glance, it seems a little out of control. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder develops just 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. In addition to all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission, it has a 48-volt mild hybrid system that delivers up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft for initial acceleration, reports Car and Driver.
The result is that it’s actually a little faster. In MotorTrend’s tests, the E450 managed to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the Genesis G80 3.5T AWD did so in 5.2 seconds. The Mercedes E-Class also beat the G80 by 0.4 seconds in the ¼ mile time. The Genesis sedan, however, had a more upscale look.
The interior shows that the Genesis G80 has an advantageous character.
Considering the Prestige 3.5T AWD is the best of the 2021 Genesis G80 lineup, it’s pretty well equipped.

It has heated rear seats, ventilated and heated front seats, a screen, a Lexicon audio system with 21 speakers and a 3D digital instrument panel, reports Autotrader. There’s also a wireless charging station, electric bolsters in the driver’s seat and massaging seats up front, reports Car and Driver. There’s also matte wood trim, Nappa leather upholstery, advanced ADAS, parking assist, heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, soft-close doors and a power trunk. And even the base version of the G80 comes with a 14.5-inch touchscreen, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The base version of the 2021 Mercedes E-Class has similar features, according to Car and Driver. The E350 comes with heated front seats, a digital calibration package, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, blind spot detection and automatic emergency braking. However, the touch screen is smaller.
Interior of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 4MATIC
APPROPRIATE: The 2021 Genesis GV80 is an example for other luxury SUVs to follow.
The E450 4MATIC also has some of the same features as the G80 3.5T AWD Prestige. But if you want Nappa leather, heated rear seats, massaging seats, parking assist, lane keeping assist and LED lights, it all costs more. However, the E450 has optional heated armrests, which the Genesis does not. However, if you equip the Mercedes E-Class to the G80 level, it will cost around $78,000.
Does it offer the same driving experience?
So, in terms of features, the 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T AWD Prestige offers more bang for your buck. But what happens when he hits the road?
Compared to the interior of the two sedans, the Mercedes E-Class has slightly softer and higher quality materials, MT reports. But it’s very close. The Genesis G80 has a ribbed metal finish and premium leather and wood. The roadshow forces the G80 to pay attention to interior details that are on par with Audi and Mercedes-Benz. And it offers more room for rear passengers than the E-Class, reports MT.
However, the reviews of the infotainment system of the Genesis G80 vary. Road & Track found it easier to use than the Mercedes system, while MT found it just the opposite. However, MT also notes that the Mercedes E-Class’ infotainment still has a steep learning curve after the mid-cycle update. Throttle House calls the G80 the most intuitive infotainment system on the market.
RELATION: One of the best features of the 2021 Genesis G70 is that it’s incredibly cool.
But perhaps the biggest differences between the Genesis G80 and the Mercedes E-Class are in the way they drive. The German model is considered the best luxury sedan not only for its interior, but also for its quiet and comfortable ride. The G80, on the other hand, has a rougher ride, according to MT, although both the car and the driver found it to ride smoothly.
However, Throttle House reports that the G80 has impressive, quick steering and BMW-like handling. In that respect it is sportier than the E-Class, although Autotrader reports that it is still a comfortable car.
Should the 2021 Genesis G80 be considered a cheaper Mercedes E-Class?
Despite some critical comments about the handling and infotainment, the 2021 Genesis G80 is worth trying out before you buy. But is it worth going to the dealer to have a look?
APPROPRIATE: The Mercedes E-Class could be the perfect luxury car.
As a pure luxury car, the Mercedes E-Class has some advantages over the G80. The materials are of better quality and the ride is more luxurious. It is also available in convertible and estate versions. But if you want to save money and want something sportier, you’ll love the Genesis.
