Ozark Trail Thermos Review: If you love hot coffee you need to read this

We’ll look at the several sizes of double walled vacuum sealed thermoses available from Walmart in the Ozark Trail Thermos brand in this study.

As a frequent outdoorsman, I can attest to the fact that a hot drink on a chilly morning or a cool drink on a scorching summer day is a creature pleasure I can’t live without. I am not only a coffee enthusiast, but I was also a previous co-owner of a coffee roasting business, so when I say I take coffee seriously, I mean it. I’m constantly on the lookout for a thermos to store my brew in since I have such a strong need for a nice cup of coffee. One of the primary reasons I wanted to investigate the Walmart Ozark Trail Thermos range was because of this. I prefer a home brew over a store-bought cup of coffee, so having a reliable thermos is essential for me, no matter what my plans for the day are.

There’s a lot more to coffee than just turning on the machine, as there is to most things in life. There is a suggested brew temperature as well as a recommended serving temperature for making the perfect cup of coffee. The odd part is that these suggestions came from more than just a bunch of hipsters who gathered at their neighborhood coffee shop. There has also been almost a century of scientific study dedicated to understanding how temperature affects your taste receptors.

In this post, I won’t go overboard with scientific research, but I will include one study to give some background. Researchers at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium found in 2005 that temperature had a direct relationship with taste perception, particularly when it came to sweetness and bitterness. To take it a step further, when the temperature of your coffee drops, you may notice a significant shift in taste.

The National Coffee Association advises brewing between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit and serving at 185 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Coffee Association. What interests me about the suggested serving temperature is that it may not be the temperature at which most coffee consumers like their beverage. According to another research, both black coffee drinkers and those who added creamer and other kinds of sweeteners preferred an average temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. To summarize, there isn’t an ideal temperature for you to enjoy your coffee, but we do have a good starting point for our evaluation of Walmart’s Ozark Trail Thermos collection.

I put up a selection of sizes that I picked up in person at my local Walmart to assist me grasp what the Ozark Trail Thermos brand from Walmart could accomplish. I had six of their double wall vacuum insulated thermoses in all, ranging in size from the 10oz Tumbler to the 32oz Tumbler.

Performance Evaluation

For all of the items I evaluated from the Ozark Trail Thermos range, I utilized a baseline temperature of 185 degrees Fahrenheit. My aim was to test how long I could keep a cup of coffee warm and whether there would be any temperature differences between the tumblers over time. I also used two 22oz Tumblers, one with a normal open mouth top and the other with a spill-proof closed lid.

I used a Weber meat thermometer that cost $15 off the shelf to check the temperature. I used normal water that I brought to a boil and then poured into each of the Tumblers before sealing them with the supplied lids.

I chose to do this test inside my home since the outside temperature in Michigan was approaching 90 degrees, and I needed to maintain a consistent room temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the experiment.

I started with an 185°F temperature and tested each Tumbler two hours after putting the water inside, four hours after placing the water inside, and twelve hours after placing the water inside.

Here are my findings:

2 hours later:

  • Tumbler – 32oz

Takeaways from a Performance

Overall, I was delighted with the Ozark Trail Thermoses’ performance. The following are a few important things that I believe should be addressed.

  • The capacity of a thermos to hold heat over time is directly proportional to its size.
  • Despite not being the biggest of the bunch, the 24oz water bottle was the obvious winner. The screw-on top seems to offer the 24oz bottle an advantage over the insulated lids.
  • When using the supplied lid vs. the extra locking lid, there is very little difference in heat retention, thus the main advantage of the second lid will be in keeping your liquid within the cup.
  • Each Tumbler has a particular purpose and does a great job of maintaining heat while you’re on the move.

In the performance area, it’s worth noting that each of the Tumblers I tested outperformed the performance figures given on the Walmart website when it came to my personal acceptable coffee-drinking temperatures.

What is a Thermos with a Double Wall Vacuum Seal?

We can assist clarify the air about what makes a double wall vacuum sealed thermos better than other designs.

This design comprises of two stainless steel walls, as well as a vacuum-sealed space between them. Convection happens in a conventional single wall thermos, moving internal heat out or vice versa, affecting the temperature of the liquid over time and at a faster rate.

Convection is prevented by the vacuum chamber of a double wall vacuum sealed thermos, which significantly extends the time your drink stays at the appropriate temperature.

Lids are different.

One of the things I was interested about was the performance of the lids. When coupled with the 22oz Tumbler, the locking and open mouth lids seem to provide comparable outcomes, but I had one more text to send.

I filled one of the 22oz cups with water that had been heated to 185 degrees Fahrenheit and the other with water that had been boiled to 140 degrees Fahrenheit using a thermal imaging scope from ATN.

The thermos on the left contains hotter water, as you can see in the picture below, but the heat signature on both Tumblers is only visible within the Tumbler.

Thermal 1

After the lids are on the Tumblers, you can see a little more about how they operate. There seems to be greater heat transmission with the locking lid than with the open mouth lid. Despite absorbing more heat, the locking lid provides a few degrees greater heat retention over time.

Thermal 2

Is it okay to put the Ozark Trail Thermoses in the dishwasher?

Yes, placing the Tumblers on the top level of the dishwasher is suggested for proper dishwashing maintenance.

Is it possible to swap out the lids?

Yes! The Ozark Trail series has two distinct lid sizes: one fits the coffee cup and bigger tumblers such as the 32oz, while the smaller lids suit the more slender tumblers such as the 22oz and 10oz.

Is it true that Walmart sells replacement lids?

Yes! Additional lids are available for purchase, both in a spill-proof design and the open mouth form that comes standard with the tumblers.

Is this thermos line BPA-free?

The Ozark Trail series of thermoses are not only BPA-free, but they are also rust-proof and sweat-proof.

Is there a warranty on the Ozark Trail Thermos Line from Walmart?

The Ozark Trail collection of thermoses from Walmart comes with a lifetime guarantee.

The great thing about coffee is that it’s one of those things that is universally loved by everyone. The bitter, intense flavor of coffee often reminds me of the taste of a very bitter medicine. For some, especially those who are used to sweet drinks, this flavor is simply not pleasing.  So, to make coffee drinkers gag, scientists have started to develop coffee that’s been sweetened with artificial sweetener and contains even more sugar.  As a result, people who prefer their coffee sweetened say that they still find the coffee to be very bitter, and that they are still facing the same problem, which is that the coffee they drink tastes very bitter..
