Consumer Reports Weighs In On 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Safety

The latest models of the full-sized pickup truck made by General Motors have been making waves. The 2019 version of the Sierra 1500 models were named to Consumer Reports’ list of the most reliable vehicles for the third year in a row. This time, the Sierra 1500 wasn’t the highest scoring vehicle on that list; that award went to the brand-new Honda Accord for its first full year on the list.

The 2019 GMC Sierra debuted with a suite of advanced safety features, including the first ever OnStar 4G LTE wireless connectivity, which allows the driver to make hands-free phone calls, send and receive text messages, and stream music and video from an over-the-air connection. GMC says that the OnStar 4G LTE operates at speeds up to 5Gbps.

Consumer Reports has issued high-level crash-test results on the GMC Sierra 1500 for the 2019 model year. This full-size pickup comes loaded with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, and the new-for-2019 version has a 4.3-star overall safety rating.. A 5.3-liter V8 engine powers the GMC Sierra 1500 in 2021. It gets 17 mpg and includes several of Consumer Reports’ recommended advanced safety features. The most pressing issue is whether or not the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is safe. Let’s take a look at the GMC Sierra 1500’s safety ratings from Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports put two trim models to the test. We’ll take a look at the SLE V8-Cyl 8-Speed Automatic Crew Cab truck.

What safety features does the GMC Sierra 1500 come with in 2021?

While forward collision warning is standard on other pickup trucks, it is only available as an option on the GMC Sierra 1500. Automatic city braking is also a no-no. Because automated highway braking isn’t accessible, the automatic braking system won’t be able to function at high speeds.

Pedestrian recognition, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, and blind spot warning are all available as options on the GMC Sierra 1500 in 2021. Backup cameras are standard on all new vehicles, however rear cross traffic warning is only available on the Sierra 1500.

The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and daytime running lights.

Except for one, the IIHS crash test results are generally positive.

Front moderate overlap crash ratings, as well as driver and passenger small overlap crash ratings, are measured by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Consumer Reports combines this with their own testing as well as the IIHS tests to provide an overall picture of a vehicle’s safety. Overlap testing determines how well a vehicle performs when a portion of its front end collides with a barrier.

The driver is excellent in the front moderate overlap and front tiny overlap. The front modest overlap: passenger, on the other hand, is just minimal. Furthermore, the construction and safety cage rating is bad, which is the lowest possible grade for a vehicle. The IIHS side, rear, and roof crush tests all received excellent results.

The NHTSA also put the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 through its paces.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates a total frontal collision as well as crashes that affect the driver and passenger individually. It also has an overall crash rating, which combines the results of the frontal and side crashes.

The GMC Sierra 1500 has a four-star overall crash assessment from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Four stars are also given to the total frontal-crash rating. Four out of five stars for overall frontal-crash, driver side, and passenger side crash tests.

The NHTSA gave it a five-star rating in the side-crash test. The side-crash driver and side-crash rear passenger tests are also negative. The side pole-crash test rating determines how well a vehicle performs while sliding laterally and colliding with a tree or pole on the driver’s side at 20 mph. In this test, the GMC Sierra 1500 received a perfect score of five stars.

Both the 2WD and 4WD GMC Sierra 1500 received four out of five star rollover evaluations.

Is the GMC Sierra 1500 safe for 2021? Overall, it has poor crash test results. You may want to seek elsewhere for your new pickup truck, given its rudimentary cabin and lack of standard safety features.

Consumer Reports is today taking the wraps off of its second-generation 23-inch braking test video, this time focusing on GMCs new 1500 Silverado. After the SUV’s debut last year, CR reported that the V8-powered model was the only model of the Sierra to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award from the organization. CR’s testing team used a 23-inch curved screen with track-able markers to test the stopping distances of the 2018 Silverado 1500, and because of the vehicle’s larger size, the test was more challenging..
