Some dealerships reward their salesmen for locating used vehicles. According to Automotive News, some dealers compensate their salespeople between $200 and $400 each vehicle. As a result, you’ll have to compete with dealerships for that coveted secondhand Prius. Or the Ford F-150. 

This is another more reason to despise auto dealerships. Automotive News spoke with one dealer who boasted about a salesman who found ten cars in May and profited $40,000 selling them. Hey, we’re fine for everyone earning money, but the nice stuff is probably already gone, so you won’t be able to get it. 

Buying old vehicles from the street, according to one vendor, is “the wisest thing I’ve done in 20 years.” As a result of the scarcity, secondhand vehicle retailers are in a frenzy. Forget about private customers searching for a personal vehicle. There’s more, however.

Some dealers refuse to sell to out-of-town customers unless they have a trade-in vehicle.

Locals are prioritized in the aim of gaining their repair business afterwards. 

And there is a scarcity. Some dealerships have just 15-20% of what they would usually have on their properties. Some dealership groups have gone from supplying 1,000 vehicles to their different lots to just a few hundred. 

Some dealerships are pressuring leasees to return their vehicles early. They have a built-in source, with the majority of them offering service. When a client comes in for an oil change, they start working on them in order to sell them something. 

Dealerships are even easing up on their low-mileage standards, accepting cars with 100,000 miles.

In other instances, for the first time, dealerships have more cars on their lots with over 100,000 kilometers. And the vehicles that dealers do have are being held for a shorter period of time. “Even with that modest increase in inventory levels, used average days on market continue to decrease, demonstrating the ongoing strength in demand for used vehicles,” said Kevin Roberts, CarGurus’ director of industry insights and analytics. 

We are now in the middle of June, and we are starting to witness a gradual decline in vehicle sales. Perhaps we’ve finally reached the pinnacle of the wholesale pricing market. However, this does not imply that prices will begin to plummet. 

Many believe that when it does arrive, it will be more of a trickle. Meanwhile, dealers are speculating on a variety of methods to get additional vehicles. There may now be greater built-in equity than when the lease was drafted, according to the seller. As a result, there may be market-driven reactions that benefit the car owner. If you’re moving states to start RVing or living in a van, be sure the state you’re moving to offers health insurance choices you can utilize.

“In certain fixed indemnity products, the plan will almost always leave customers exposed to substantial extra costs: policies that pay $500 per day of hospitalization or $700 per operation will leave most patients exposed to extremely high costs,” according to the Brookings Institute.

That is why Fixed Indemnity Plans are less expensive than the Affordable Care Act’s plans. The insurance firm may charge less for coverage since it knows precisely how much risk it will take on (and how much money it will lose).

If you’re concerned that you’ll go over your annual limit, you may “level up” to put on extra coverage for accidental injury or sickness.

Samaritan Basic has a cheaper monthly cost, but you’ll have to spend $1,500 out of pocket before Samaritan kicks in and covers 90%.

We saw Safety Wing mentioned in a few of blog articles on the best health insurance for full-time RVers, so we wanted to learn more about it.


Safety Wing is a travel insurance business that just launched Remote Health, a health insurance program for digital nomads. At first sight, it seems to be a good deal, with complete cancer coverage, surgeries, COVID, and other benefits for just $250.

Here’s what their website has to say about Remote Health, which makes it sound like a great option:

“A comprehensive health insurance plan designed for remote workers and nomads who spend as much time as they like overseas. Full coverage in your own nation, with no pandemic exclusions.”

However, you must reside in the United States to be eligible for this coverage. You must have a physical address outside of the United States and be able to verify it with a rental/lease agreement, bank statement, VISA card, or evidence of post office rental.

You may then tack on a “U.S.” add-on, which provides coverage for up to six months in the United States. However, your actual address cannot be in the United States.

I received a fast estimate for myself, and my monthly coverage with the U.S. add-on is over $400 as a 40-year-old woman. This does not cover any outpatient treatment, such as physicals, preventive care, or urgent care; only in-patient care, in which I would be admitted to a hospital, is covered.

So this software didn’t make sense to me, and I can’t see how helpful it would be for full-time RVers or van lifers.

Only if you’re an RVer who spends part of the year renting an apartment outside of the nation would this work. You may use that address as your main residence and then RV for up to six months in the United States.

What if you’re a full-time RVer who also travels the globe portion of the year?

One issue I have when considering health insurance as a van lifer is that I spend six months of the year aboard a yacht in Mexico. As a result, I only need U.S. healthcare for 6 months of the year in the event that I get sick or injured.

A few businesses provide a hybrid of health insurance that may be used everywhere in the globe, including the United States. This is really health insurance, not travel insurance. 

I won’t go into detail about these alternatives since I believe they apply to a smaller number of RVers and van lifers, but if you’re interested, here are some links to look out:

Things to Consider When Choosing Health Insurance as a Van Lifer or Full-Time RVer

Before you select the finest health insurance plan for life on the road, consider the following advice and recommendations.

For full-time RVers and van lifers, telehealth is an excellent health insurance alternative. Many plans include telehealth as a benefit, which you may utilize an unlimited number of times. Telehealth is an excellent way to ask a doctor questions and even have a prescription delivered to a nearby drugstore.

Telehealth is available via several ACA policies, Fixed Indemnity Plans, and Health Share Plans.

Telehealth may also be purchased through a business like Teledoc. 

Determine your risk tolerance.

Assessing your risk tolerance is an important part of choosing the best health insurance for full-time RVing. How much are you prepared to risk if you get a life-threatening disease such as cancer? Do you wish to put your faith in a medical sharing non-profit to cover your expenses? What will you do if they refuse to cover your expenses?

The cost of health insurance is proportional to the level of risk. 

“When you buy an insurance policy, whether it’s for a vehicle, a house, an RV, or health insurance, you’re asking a business to cover a risk,” Andrew Monk said. “The danger of being ill or wounded is covered by health insurance. Cost and risk are linked. The higher-priced policies are most likely more expensive because the insurance provider is taking on greater risk.” 

Most ACA plans, for example, are more expensive than Fixed Indemnity since that business will cover ALL OF YOUR BILLS once you reach your deductible, even if you need millions of dollars in cancer treatments. 

Make a contingency plan.

You never know when you’ll be struck by sickness or accident, so having some money on hand is essential. According to several RV sites, you should establish a Health Savings Account (HSA) so you may put money in it before taxes to pay for medical treatment.

Keep in mind that Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are only compatible with Affordable Care Act plans.

I’m still trying to find out which health insurance plan is ideal for a van lifer and sailor who lives part-time in the United States and part-time in Mexico as of May 2021.

The super-reliable Rotax V-twin engine remains, and it can now be reached more easily beneath the dumping cargo bed area on this model.



Can-own Am’s XPS tires are new to this range. The 62-inch-wide basic versions will be shod with 27×14 tires on larger wheels, extending the stance by approximately 2 inches throughout the range over the Maverick Sports. This model will feature a front-wheel travel of 12.5 inches and a rear-wheel travel of 13 inches. The better-equipped XT versions will feature a 64-inch width and XPS Trail King tires measuring 28/14 inches. Maxxis Big Horns on 12-inch wheels were utilized on the Maverick Sport and Trail versions as a comparison.

What it’s Like Overlanding Baja in a Truck Camper

You may have seen him on the big screen in War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise, or on television in Shameless. Justin Chatwin, on the other hand, prefers camping and dirt riding over the glitter and glamour of Los Angeles in his spare time.

Chatwin slept in a pickup truck camper shell for a while before realizing he needed something a bit more comfy for his backroads excursions.

“I was looking for a refrigerator. I’d had enough of receiving ice every other day or two. “I wanted water and a more comfortable bed,” Chatwin said. “I was browsing through Instagram one day when I came across Bound for Nowhere’s truck camper by Four Wheel Campers, and it looked so amazing, I became obsessed.”

He couldn’t stop browsing at truck campers on the internet and on the road, so he decided to purchase The Raven, a Four Wheel camper.

“I have a Toyota Tundra that was already equipped with suspension, wheels, and a light bar, and I wanted something that I could simply throw on my truck,” Chatwin said.

Overlanding in a Truck Camper in Baja

Chatwin and his fiancée took their first vacation in his new truck camper to Baja, California. The two spent six months visiting the Baja peninsula’s bays, beaches, mountains, cities, and missions.


Chatwin remarked, “I’ve been traveling to Mexico for years.” “11 years ago, I rode my Harley to La Ventana. I’ve spent a lot of time in Mexico, and it’s completely won my heart as one of my favorite places.”

To locate the most isolated campgrounds, the pair utilized the iOverlander boondocking app and sailing guidebook. 

Chatwin said, “I had maybe 12 locations on the map that I’d never gone to, like very isolated beaches and tiny peninsulas.” “I traveled to places where I intended to sail but instead drove there in my vehicle. Some others stayed for a few weeks, but we typically just stayed for 5-6 days.”

They often slept on private land, spending $2-$10 each night to park in beautiful locations. Fresh fish, fresh shrimp, and even kayak rentals would be offered by locals. 

“The natives are quite knowledgeable about what gringos want and why they are there. They aren’t selling silver bracelets anymore; instead, they are approaching us with an understanding of what we are there to experience,” Chatwin said.

His Favorite Overlanding Locations in Baja

Chatwin has observed a significant change in his years of touring Baja. There are now people where there was previously total seclusion.


“We used to take our bikes out to Bay of Conception and stay at El Coyote since we were the only ones there.” It’s now very crowded – there was a traffic congestion down there,” Chatwin said. “I was disappointed. But I was also encouraged by the fact that people were getting out there and doing new things. And tourism benefits both the Mexican economy and the Mexican people, which is a good thing.”

He won’t identify a single beautiful beach that was 90 minutes away from the main highway and accessible only by a dusty dirt road. It necessitated the use of 4WD and the crossing of a farmer’s private property. 

The pair went paddleboarding, visited a nearby farm to buy fresh goat cheese and veggies, and rested in the peace and quiet. “Only two vans and a couple Four Wheel campers were there,” Chatwin stated.

He claims that due to applications like iOverlander, where you can see photos and read evaluations of the route before choosing a campground, everything has gotten lot simpler. 


“Let’s walk down this road and see where it leads to let’s get on this app and see what’s accessible in this region,” says the adventurer. Many of the locations we visited had a lot of people out exploring, which was inspiring,” Chatwin added.

Why Justin isn’t cut out for full-time overlanding

Chatwin decided that living full time in a truck camper wasn’t for him while on his epic pop up truck camper trip in Baja. He yearned for greater belonging, security, and meaning in his life. He said, “If I don’t have someplace to put my compass, I simply wind myself spinning in circles, thinking ‘what’s the purpose of all this traveling?’”


Rather of taking his truck camper to mainland Mexico, he chose to purchase a home in La Ventana, a popular winter destination for kitesurfing and other wind sports. However, during the summer, La Ventana is too hot, so he’s renting a home in White Salmon, Washington, for the hottest months and the northern kiting season.

In November, the pair will travel to Baja, dividing their time between their house in La Ventana and truck camping. Chatwin is considering driving to Chiapas or Guatemala. 

It’s wonderful to be a part of the Four Wheel truck campers group, he added.

“On our way there, we’ll simply run into other Four Wheel campers, and they’ll offer me ideas on how to install other pieces of equipment or various camper hacks,” Chatwin said. “They’ll also inform me where the finest camping spots are. It’s a fascinating subculture, and it’s prompted me to reactivate my Facebook account in order to interact with these campers.”

The advantages of a four-wheel-drive truck camper

While some people prefer living in a van, Chatwin believes that a truck camper is the ideal off-road setup for his camping style.

It can go over tougher terrain than a vehicle.

In approximately an hour, he can tow the camper away and utilize the truck for other adventures or as a regular vehicle.

The camper is a pop-up camper, so it’s low to the ground and doesn’t create any wind resistance.

Chatwin has the ability to stack a lot of stuff on top of the camper. On his Raven camper, Four Wheel Campers added additional heavy-duty struts so he could add a Yakima cargo box on top, which stores kitesurfing gear and wetsuits. He can even attach a kiteboard to it and transport an e-bike in the rear of the truck.

The Maze and Plan B snake around the top of a magnificent escarpment with amazing views of the valley below, and they all feature spectacular red-rock formations. There are also open desert, dunes, and sand-wash portions that have been utilized in previous WORCS courses, as well as many obstacles not included in the guided rides, such as the Chute at the conclusion of Double Sammy and Plan B’s Toilet Bowl. If you want to reserve a group campsite at SHSP, be sure to register early. Dry camping is also available near the Sand Hollow Reservoir. Honda and Yamaha are expected to return with trial rides of the Talon, YXZ1000R, and Wolverine. The rally T-shirt, three Camp Chef breakfasts, and three days of guided rides with ROTR guides were all included in the $135 online registration fee for the 2020 SxSAR.

We also like the fact that wool is a sustainable and ecologically beneficial material for vehicle construction. Wool is biodegradable and serves as a fertilizer when it is returned to the soil. If you ever need to remove it from your setup for whatever reason, or if you have leftovers, you may use it as composting.

When compared to synthetic fibers, spray foam, or foam board, this is a significant difference.

We care a lot about our environmental effect and strive to live sustainably as a couple who lives small in a campervan and on a sailboat.

Companies like 3M, which makes Thinsulate, are totally at odds with our values. The state of Minnesota is negotiating a $850 million settlement with 3M for contaminating ground water with cancer-causing chemicals. We find it difficult to support a business like that.

The sound deadening qualities of wool vehicle insulation are also beneficial.

The sound deadening properties of wool insulation for a vehicle are amazing. Some individuals prefer to insulate only using wool rather than soundproofing materials. However, if you want to add further sound deadening to your vehicle, you may use something like Kilmat.

Wool van insulation can also reach those hard-to-reach places in your van that conventional insulation and sound deadening materials can’t, such as the headliner region.

Wool measures at 90% when tested using the Noise Reduction Coefficient (a measurement for how effectively sound is absorbed), which is a very high figure!

Wool Insulation for a Campervan Filters the Air

If you have sensitive lungs, you will enjoy the air filtering qualities of wool insulation. Wool binds to harmful pollutants including formaldehyde, NOx, and SO2 and prevents them from escaping into the environment. 

Researchers in Switzerland discovered that wool air filters collected 94-96 percent of pollutants over the course of six hours.

In our vehicle, we’d rather have a chemical-absorbing insulation product than one that emits them, as several alternative insulation materials on the market do.
