Audi Phoned In the e-Tron EV-Here’s Why

Audi promised us so much more. Audi has already shown us what 2018 could look like when it comes to electrification. And it didn’t look like a Porsche Taycan, because it’s Audi’s first electric car that’s actually a Porsche Taycan. Audi’s electric future promised to look not like the e-Tron, but like the 2018 PB18 e-Tron.

Remember the PB18 concept? It made its debut at the 2018 Pebble Beach Auto Week in Monterey, California. It was a big deal. And the PB18 was impressive. Its long hood with a tapered wing-shaped rear end is fully integrated into the look of the Kammback LMP1 pilot for LeMans. You even get a glimpse of the e-Tron.

But the e-Tron is just a fold of Tycan. It has the same wheelbase, two synchronous AC motors, a two-speed automatic transmission and an internal body design. It’s a bit like chocolate and chocolate ice cream; they’re different, but they taste pretty much the same.

Since it shares the same platform as the Porsche, a production version of the PB18 would completely separate the two. There will be no confusion between the two, which will happen when you see Tycan or e-Tron in the distance. I see the low sedan in the distance; is it a Tycan or an e-Tron? You would never confuse PB18 with Taikan.

We love both Tycan and E-Tron. They are both irresistible in the flesh. But it’s the same car. Just like the Buick Regal and the 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass. And that’s good, I guess, but it’s a slippery slope.

Sharing platforms can blur the distinction between vehicles, which can be a problem for a business. Just ask the GM. The differences between brands using the same platform became so awkward that it was difficult to tell them apart. Optical differences are difficult to identify, especially with the same colouring.

This also applies to other Audi models, such as the A1 hatchback and the Skoda Fabia. Both share the same platform and are just one of Hofmeister’s almost identical quirks. So we’ll see in the future where VW Group’s eagerness to use an electric platform for PSA outside of the e-Tron and Taycan could be confusing. The company plans to use its EIA electric platform for a wide range of vehicles, but the first two are very similar. These are ID3 and ID4.  The profiles are exactly the same, and the parts that make them unique are barely visible.

With the same platforms, the only difference between the vehicles is the design. If the design does not distinguish between different models that use the same electric platform, there is no reason for consumers to think they have a choice.
